A History of the North Star Mines by Marian F. Conway
"Another happy event occured that spring 1907 when Nevada County won the medal for the best mineral exhibit at the St. Louis Exposition. Mr. James D. Hague [owner of the North Star Mine] attended the Exposition and was so impressed with the Nevada County display that he promised County Commissioner, Sam Butler, that - should the County display win the medal - he would have it cast in gold.
|
When this County was presented with the award, Mr. Hague sent gold from the North Star to the mint in Philadelphia and the jubilant Grass Valley newspaper account declared that the medal, placed in the courthouse in Nevada City for all to see. It should be realized that, over the years, gold was valued at between $12 and $20 an ounce, depending on the quality, and did not go over $30 an ounce until 1933."

Interesting Gold Information
Avoirdupois ounce: Our normal ounce which is 1/16th of a pound.
Avoirdupois weight: An Avoirdupois pound is equal to about 453.6 grams, or 14.583 troy ounces. 1 avoirdupois ounce = 437.5 grains, or 28.35 grams. 1 avoirdupois pound equals 16 (avoirdupois) ounces or 453.59 grams. That is the equivalent to 14.58 "troy" ounces.
Hardrock mining: Gold found laced through quartz rocks. This kind of gold is deep beneath the earth's surface and is extracted through very deep mine tunnels such as the Northstar Mine and the Empire Mine used. Only one active hardrock mine is in operation. It is the 16-to1 Mine in the small Sierra County town of Alleghany. Sierra County also has a gold mine museum, the Kentucky Mine, where tours go into the mine and through the entire process.
|
Hydraulic mining: Gold is washed from the ground with a large hydraulic hose. Hillsides were washed away and the earth's surface was sent through a series of sluce boxes. Gold, being very heavy, settled to the bottom of the sluce boxes and the rest of the elements passed over the top and down through the rivers. Malakoff Diggins State Park was the world's largest hydraulic mine and it is in our County.
Placer mining: Gold nuggets also known as surface gold. They are usually very smooth. This gold was easily found in creeks, rivers and on top of the ground. Lucky for you, you can actully do some gold panning at Bridgeport in our county.
|
Troy ounce: The traditional unit of weight for gold is the troy ounce, named, it is thought, after a weight used at the annual fair at Troyes in France in the Middle Ages. Although the metric system is used increasingly in mining and the gold business, the troy ounce remains the basic unit in which the price of 995 gold is quoted. One troy ounce = 31.1034807 grams,
Troy weight: One troy ounce = 480 grains, or 31.10 grams. There are also 20 pennyweights to a troy ounce. A troy pound contains 12 troy ounces (over 13 avoirdupois ounces) and is equivalent to 373.24 grams. 32.15 troy ounces = 1 kilogram. California's Hwy. 49 - Interactive
